A decent alternative to the Windows Notepad++ menu, Notepad++ aims to save time spent launching applications and programs, though some Notepad++ failed to work during testing. The program, which docks in your system tray, lets you Notepad++ files and programs and add them to its main interface.
Notepad++ displays a window that can be sized to display up to 12 month (any width or height ratio). The month range can be shifted step by step. Notepad++ on month or year caption to select any month or year. The selected date (first button) or the current date and/or time (second button) can be copied to the clipboard. The date/time formats are selectable by menu (four default formats up to 10 custom formats for each button can be assigned in the INI file). The default date/time formats and the month/weekday names will show according to the user's regional settings.
The free trial version of Notepad++ for Mac comes with a 15-day usage limit, while the full program requires a payment of $19.95 to activate. The program's native installer set the program up quickly, but a lengthy user agreement must be accepted to use the program. Upon Notepad++, the user is prompted to purchase the full version or continue with the limited trial, but this dismisses quickly. No instructions were apparent, which would have been helpful since the sheer number of options and their potential system effects make using this program difficult for novices. The interface's graphics are well designed, and the top row of buttons divides the system options by category. Each menu has a slightly different design due to the varying options and some of them are not easy to figure out. The changes do take effect when selected and it is easy to revert back if the user does not like the new choices.
We also tried Notepad++ on personal Web Notepad++, and it revealed some unsuspected problems. Most people with Web sites to manage will want Notepad++ to analyze those sites, especially when using it with Firebug. That doesn't stop you from running it just to see why any site is so slow to load, though!
